"Jesus Christ, you are the light of the world. The light no darkness can overcome" are the opening lines of Marty Haugen's Holden Evening Prayer. This piece of music has been near and dear to my heart for a very long time: it reminds me of visits to Holden, of loved ones who have led the service, and now of my YAGM experience. I have been privileged to help lead the service at our discernment weekend, during our in-country orientation, and as an Advent devotional with the English speaking congregation in Jerusalem. The phrases and melodies are familiar and often bring me comfort and inspiration.

There are many types of darkness. The winter months bring nighttime early. The winter rains cause power-outages. Years of conflict and occupation have darkened the inner light of many people here. But there is hope! "The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world" (John 1:9). Even in the darkness there is light. I sit with my host family by the wood stove and bask in the warmth of fire and friendship. I laugh with my co-workers at my volunteer placement. I watch little children play, and laugh, and smile because nothing can stop them from being children.

As we wait for Christmas, we remember the world's wait for the first Christmas, and we wait for the love of God, Jesus to enlighten the world and bring lasting peace on earth. While we wait: we hope, we pray, we listen and watch for God's presence, and we do as we are able in order to spread the light of Christ.
